The Pilibhit Saga is a boring, overlong, tale of an eccentric with delusions of leadership, sighs Deepa Gahlot.: Srijit Mukherji’s film Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga is based off of real life incidents in impoverished villages in Uttarakhand. When elderly people from these villages live by the wildlife reserve, they are often sent into the forest for tigers to kill them so that their families can claim compensation from the government. Whether Srijit made this in an effort to turn it into a compelling tragedy like Imamura’s The Ballad of Narayama , or a cruel farce like Aparajito (1956), his stance on this practice is at best reprehensible.
